Glassmaker Corning just unveiled its newest version of Gorilla Glass, the chemically strengthened super glass that dozens of consumer electronics makers use in their devices.Called Gorilla Glass 5, the new glass was formulated to improve drop performance from gadgets that are dropped onto rough surfaces from certain heights — specifically, waist height to shoulder height.Selfie-fumblers rejoice: Corning says Gorilla Glass 5 survives up to 80 percent of the time when dropped from 1.6 meters.The new glass is the successor to Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which was introduced in the fall of 2014.

Corning Incorporated has unveiled last July 20 the Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the latest breakthrough technology to protect the cover glass of smartphone devices from the risk of breaking whenever it is dropped.According to Corning's news releases, their new cover glass is designed to survive breakages from everyday drops.Lab tests show that the Gorilla Glass 5 can survive being dropped on rough and unforgiving surfaces, four times better than competing glass designs."With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels," said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass.

Dropping your smartphone mid-selfie may soon be less traumatic.New York glass maker Corning has unveiled the latest iteration of Gorilla Glass, which the company claims is four times as likely to survive a fall from waist or shoulder height as its competitors.The company's Gorilla Glass products have been used in 4.5 billion devices since 2007, including products from Samsung, Apple, Motorola, LG, Hewlett-Packard and others, according to its website.Gorilla Glass 5 remains intact after falls from 1.5 metres approximately 80 per cent of the time, Corning says.
