"TechCrunch" : Android creator Andy Rubin teases first look at Essential’s bezel-less smartphone

We finally have a peek at the smartphone that android co-founder Andy Rubin and his team have been building. Today, Rubin tweeted out a teaser photo of the yet-to-be-named device emerging from his stealth startup. There's precious little in the way of feature clues for the nearly bezel-less device, and going head-to-head against Apple's iphone will undoubtedly require something radical. Also reportedly, Softbank recently bowed out of talks to invest $100 million in the startup at a $1 billion valuation. I'm really excited about how this is shaping up.

The father of android , Andy Rubin, is currently kicking the tires on a new smartphone company named Essential. Essential may shake up the smartphone industry and could potentially give Samsung and Apple their first real competitor -- at least when it comes to taking away market share. Speaking of Apple, Cupertino may have been to blame for SoftBank's decision to pull as much as $100 million in funding from Essential. Little is known about the new smartphone just yet, but the image is rather telling. That news surfaced last week, amid rumors that Apple may have strong-armed SoftBank to pull out from backing Rubin's fledgling firm.

Essential's flagship smartphone is expected to drop in mid-2017. Essential's flagship phone will serve as the foundation for a lineup of connected products, according to early reports about the company's movements. Rubin and co. are apparently working on a proprietary version of Apple's 3D Touch and they're playing around with magnetic charging accessories. A handful of its smartphone prototypes are larger than an iphone 7 Plus, featuring bezel-free screens and ceramic backings. The image Rubin shared today is reminiscent of Xiaomi's Mi MIX concept phone, which has an edge-to-edge 1080p LCD and a ceramic body.
