Chinese telecoms equipment giant Huawei recaptured the lead in China's smartphone market in Q1, boosting its market share to 18 per cent after increasing shipments 25 per cent year-on-year, according to Canalys. Despite growing shipments 55 per cent year-on-year in Q1, Oppo fell to second with just under 20 million units shipped. After spending two quarters in second place behind Oppo, Huawei shipped nearly 21 million units in Q1 2017 (see chart below, click to enlarge), the research company revealed. Canalys estimates 114 million smartphones shipped in China during the period, an increase of 9 per cent year-on-year. China's smartphone market continued to expand in the opening quarter of 2017 despite rising penetration.

Huawei once again rules the world's biggest smartphone market. But as Oppo, vivo, and OnePlus are actually individual companies and not just divisions of BBK, the analysts are counting their results separately. Huawei has thus dethroned Oppo, which was relegated to second place with 20 million sales. vivo rounds up the Top 3 for Q1 2017, with 15% market share and 17 million units shipped. Anyway, going back to smartphone sales in China in Q1 of this year - Apple came in fourth, while Xiaomi was fifth, shipping just 9 million devices.

The FINANCIAL -- After spending two quarters in second place, Huawei moved past Oppo to recapture the lead in China's smartphone market in Q1 2017. The Chinese smartphone giant, which launched the P10 and P10 Plus during MWC, shipped close to 21 million units to secure an 18% market share. Third-placed Vivo had the lowest annual growth of the top three, capturing a 15% share with its shipment of 17 million units. In the corresponding quarter a year ago, Huawei led with Vivo second and Oppo fourth, together accounting for 42% of the market. Despite strong annual growth of 55%, Oppo fell to second place with shipments of just under 20 million units.
