With manual controls, Moment's new app makes a smartphone feel more like a DSLR

Moment, a company known for its high-quality smartphone lenses, launched its redeveloped Moment Pro Camera App. Just like its lenses, which brought a DSLR-like interchangeable lens system to smartphones, the app brings DSLR-like manual controls — the combination of lens and app makes a phone's camera function even more like a DSLR. The app offers manual exposure, focus, and white balance controls, within what the company describes as a minimal user interface. While this function isn't unique to the Moment app, it's still nice to have. While the app works with or without a Moment lens attached, several features are designed for pairing the app with a Moment lens or case.

Huawei plans to "revamp" smartphone gaming with new GPU Turbo

referring to Arriving as part of an EMUI update to a range of Huawei devices, GPU Turbo promises to offer much-improved gaming performances without users having to upgrade their devices. The same concept was applied to GPU Turbo, which takes its namesake from the turbochargers of automobiles. GPU Turbo is able to accelerate performance by optimising system utilisation of software and hardware resources. Huawei says GPU Turbo will "raise the bar" for GPU performance across Huawei smartphones, beginning with the Huawei Mate 10 and P20 Series in August. With GPU Turbo installed, graphics processing efficiency is improved by up to 60% while overall SoC power consumption is saved by 30%.

You don't want a new smartphone

You don't need a new smartphone – you can get a device released last year, or even the year before that, that has most or all of the same essential features released in phones coming this year. A smartphone manufacturer wouldn't release a smartphone unless they had a new model with easy-to-recognize upgrades compared to its predecessor. We've gotten to a place where there's still a lot of profit to be had by smartphone manufacturers, and the way to have that profit is competition in hype. The only reason I can currently see that a new smartphone should be purchased by the average consumer is as follows. For those people, a smartphone that's one generation older than the newest model is a perfectly legit option.
