Huawei overtakes Apple in smartphone shipments – TechCrunch

As it stated in Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei is now the second biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world according to new reports from IDC and Canalys, as The Verge initially spotted. But the biggest surprise is that Huawei now has a 15.8 percent market share with 54.2 million smartphones shipped in Q2. In other words, many Samsung buyers are now buying Huawei devices, or other Android devices. Canalys confirms this trend with the same order — Samsung, Huawei and then Apple. Apple usually releases new devices in September, which creates a huge spike during the last quarter of the year.

Research firm Canalys also attributed Huawei's performance for the quarter to strong sales of the P20, as well as the success of its Honor brand. The company said Huawei shipped close to 4 million Honor-branded smartphones outside of China for the quarter, representing a 150 percent increase from the same period last year. "Honor, which has long been a major brand in China but relatively small overseas, has taken a pivotal role in this strategy." A top Huawei executive raged against American carriers, accusing them of depriving customers of choice. The company responded by saying it posed no greater cybersecurity risk than any other tech vendor.

Huawei beats Apple with global shipments to become world's No 2 smartphone vendor in second quarter

as mentioned in Huawei's strong performance is partly due to strong sales of its latest flagship model, the P20, and a stellar contribution from its budget brand HonorChina's leading smartphone brand, Huawei Technologies, outstripped Apple in global smartphone shipments in the second quarter this year, putting it in second place behind Samsung Electronics and signalling the rising popularity of its handsets around the world. Huawei became the world's number two smartphone vendor, a long sought-after milestone for the company, after it shipped 54 million handsets, up 41 per cent year on year, Canalys said in a report on Wednesday. Samsung remained the top vendor in the three-month period but felt the impact of Huawei and others by posting an 8 per cent decline to 73 million shipments, while Apple fell to third, shipping 41 million iPhones with tepid year-on-year growth of one per cent. Huawei's glittering second quarter performance is partly due to strong sales of its latest flagship model, the P20 series – which has outshone its P10 and P9 predecessors – and a stellar performance from its budget brand Honor. The mid-priced phone maker accounted for two thirds of the near 16 million jump in handset shipments by Huawei in the second quarter, helping the Chinese phone maker to beat Apple in overall sales, according to Canalys.

Less noticed, it was also just overtaken in worldwide smartphone sales by a Chinese rival with a huge disadvantage. In the second quarter, Huawei sold 54.2 million units, while Apple sold 41.3 million, according to preliminary data from IDC's "Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker" released yesterday (July 31). Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, yesterday reported lackluster smartphone sales for the second quarter, thanks largely to low demand for its Galaxy S9, also released in March. While the South Korean company still enjoys a comfortable lead in global smartphone sales, at 71.5 million for the quarter according to IDC, it faces increasingly tough competition from Chinese rivals including Huawei. Apple ranks fifth in smartphone market share in China, behind No.
