Read MoreBack in July, we reported that Huawei passed Apple for the number two spot in smartphone shipments. In the past eight years, Huawei's smartphone shipments have increased from three million units in 2010 to 200 million units in 2018. Today, Huawei revealed it has exceeded 200 million units shipped in 2018, setting a new record for Huawei. The Huawei P20, Huawei Mate 20, Nova, and Honor 10 series of devices have proven to be extremely popular with smartphone buyers in 2018. In regards to the Huawei P20 series, Huawei reports that since its release in March, global shipments of the P20 series have exceeded 16 million units, with female users accounting for nearly half of that number.

Today, Huawei revealed it has shipped more than 200 million smartphones in 2018, including its Honor sub-brand, confirming an estimation it made back in August. According to Huawei, there are now 500 million Huawei phones in active use across more than 170 countries. That Huawei has broken the 200 million units barrier in a single calendar year should perhaps come as little surprise. Indeed, in Q2 2018 Huawei displaced Apple to become the number two smartphone maker globally, the first time in seven years that Samsung and Apple hadn't held the top two positions. It's also worth looking at the company's growth over a longer time frame — in 2010, Huawei shipped 3 million smartphones, and by 2015 it had passed the 100 million mark.

Gartner: Global smartphone shipments eke minor Q3 2018 growth as next sales boom awaits 5G and foldables

as mentioned in Global smartphone sales increased 1.4 percent YoY as compared to Q3 2017, according to a new report published by Gartner. The report details Apple retaining its 11.8 percent share of the smartphone market, with Samsung losing 3.4 percent compared to the same period last year. While Samsung remained number one in smartphone market share, their near three and a half percent decline indicates the severity of how threatening more affordable brands such as Huawei and Xiaomi have become. The report indicates that without Huawei and Xiaomi included, smartphone sales would have declined 5.2 percent globally. Gartner predicts 65 million 5G smartphones will be sold throughout 2020, and with Apple not expected to release a 5G smartphone until at least that year, it's clear 5G will be extremely profitable for the industry.
