Apple partner to build flexible smartphone displays

Japan Display Inc, which supplies Apple among others, has announced the development of a 5.5-inch flexible LCD display for smartphones that it's planning to put into mass production in 2018. Earlier efforts at bendable screens have also focused on OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology rather than LCD (liquid crystal display). And with JDI a well-established market supplier, it may well be the first to bring this kind of LCD tech to a mobile. With numerous kinds of display tech in development, we can't say for sure when you'll be able to get your hands on a smartphone you can fold up and put in your pocket, but that day is getting closer. Not only will the phones of the future have bendable screens, they'll be better equipped to handle a drop to the sidewalk.

Meet Japan Display's fully flexible smartphone screen
Japan Display will join other firms, such as LG and Samsung, which are already building flexible displays for next-generation smartphones. Apple partner Japan Display, which already provides displays for the company's products, is ready to begin building flexible screens, the company confirmed this week. It may one day lead to that, however, as innovations in flexible displays lead to bendable smartphones and tablets. Like flexible displays, however, which aren't necessarily able to "bend" and are better used for flexing under pressure, bendable displays can help create a much more rugged product that is less prone to cracking. This isn't quite bendable display technology just yet, though Apple has plenty of patents describing products with bending and folding mechanisms.
