Expect only mid-range and high-end flagships from HTC moving forward. Chia-Lin Chang, President of HTC's Smartphone and Connected Device divisions, says the Taiwanese company will stop chasing high sales numbers in the entry-level smartphone markets and instead focus on designing and selling highly profitable devices. Only time will tell if this new strategy will lift HTC's smartphone division out of the red, but at least we're sure to see the top tier of smartphones from HTC moving forward. HTC is hoping that less is more when it comes to smartphone offerings. Instead of chasing high sales figures with cheaper devices, the plan will be to focus on mid-range devices and premium flagships with higher profit margins — such as the forthcoming HTC U Ultra and U Play.

"In 2017, competition between Huawei, Oppo and Vivo will become much more intense, while their increasing scale and bargaining power within the industry will have a larger impact on device strategies of operators and open channel partners," Ding predicted. "In 2016, the top three brands were competing with new product launches, go-to-market strategies and brand building," Canalys research analyst Jessie Ding was quoted as saying.Xiaomi took the fourth spot while Apple fell to fifth place.

"Canalys analyst Jessie Ding suggested that as elsewhere, many Chinese may be content with older iPhones and waiting for this year's models, led by the "iPhone 8," sometimes known as the "iPhone X. The company was in fact eclipsed by Xiaomi, even though the latter saw shipments fall 21 percent to 51.4 million.Leading the market was Huawei with 76.2 million.
