The scientists compared the smartphone sperm tracker to current lab equipment by analyzing the same semen samples side by side. The phone attachment works with a smartphone app the researchers created to count the number of sperm and measure motility, which are markers for infertility. After a vasectomy, men are supposed to have their sperm count tested to tell whether the procedure worked. Low sperm count is a marker for male infertility, a condition that is actually a neglected health issue worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Men may soon be able to take their own sperm count — at home.

New smartphone device to test male fertility developedBoston, Mar 23, 2017, (PTI)Scientists have developed a new smartphone-based device to measure semen quality, an advance that may prove to be a boon in countries lacking access to fertility tests. The team also evaluated how well both trained and untrained users performed the test using the smartphone-based device. A disposable microchip with a capillary tip and a rubber bulb is used for simple, power-free semen sample handling. This test is low-cost, quantitative, highly accurate, and can analyse a video of an undiluted, unwashed semen sample in less than five seconds," Shafiee added. Researchers collected and studied about 350 clinical semen specimens at the MGH Fertility Centre to evaluate the test.

Researchers make super-cheap smartphone sperm test
Instead of simply relying on an app like similar at-home fertility tests, this method also utilizes a tech-filled smartphone case. The only downside to the test so far is that it struggles to detect deformed sperm - a crucial part of assessing fertility. Offering an app-only solution which measure's swimming ability, Yo unfortunately involves users getting sperm uncomfortably close to your phone's camera. Previously announced fertility apps, Yo and Trak have offered similar at home testing solutions, with Trak already receiving FDA approval. While this isn't the the first method that allows men to test the potency of their seed, it's certainly one of the best implemented.
