A New York woman is trading her smartphone for the chance to win $100,000 if she can go an entire year without using with her -- or anyone else's -- mobile device. Mugdan will rely on a flip phone to make calls while her iPhone remains locked in a "cell phone jail" provided by VitaminWater.

Devices like Google Home and Amazon Echo are OK, too, as long as they're not hooked up to a smartphone. "I really thought that I was a good fit for it, but this was the kind of thing I never expected that I would actually win," Mugdan tells CNBC Make It.
