The two biggest brands in the West are the two biggest losers as the smartphone slump continues, analyst Gartner has found. Apple and Samsung both shouldered major market share losses: Samsung down from 20.9 per cent globally to 19 per cent, and Apple down from 14 per cent to 13.4 per cent. But it was more dramatic in China: down from 14.6 per cent market share in Q4 2017 to 8.8 per cent in Q4 2018, with annual sales of just over 209 million units. "OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo are still 30 per cent cheaper compared to Samsung and Apple, but have equally good features. "It looks at market value, not market share.

Research by consultancy firm Gartner found global smartphone sales stalled in the final quarter of last year year, growing just 0.1 per cent from the end of 2017 as users increasingly decided not to upgrade their handsets. Huawei's smartphone market share climbed to 15 per cent in the three months ending in December, up four per cent from a year before. Apple and Samsung held first and second place with market shares of 17 per cent and 16 per cent respectively, but Gartner said high unit prices were leading buyers to put off upgrades. Gartner said the South Korean firm had lost share year-on-year, slipping by around five per cent as its Galaxy S9 and Note9 handsets failed to drive sales.
